Completed in March, 2011, Solstice is among the most popular housing choices for seniors in Opelika. With its private neighborhood “feel,” and its location proximate to the regional hospital, medical arts center and Tiger Town, the area’s premier shopping area, Solstice is ideally located. This senior apartment community consists of 28 duplexes, each with a carport and a covered rear veranda. The large clubhouse provides an upscale venue for holiday gatherings, birthday parties, pot luck meals, bible study groups and calligraphy classes taught by one of the residents.

Each apartment features nine foot ceilings, hardwood laminate flooring, solid wood cabinetry with granite countertops, and Energy Star appliances.

One resident commented, “Solstice is truly an answered prayer for me. Three years ago I had a good job, a good income and no worries. I never imagined that in the span of 36 months I’d only be able to afford about $400/month in rent. Now, here in this community, with such a loving manager, great neighbors and a beautiful well-built home, I am truly blessed.”

This project was developed in partnership with Community Housing Initiatives of Columbus, Georgia. The project utilized low-income housing tax credits, HOME loan funds and a TECAP (Tax Credit Assistance Program) loan provided by the Alabama Housing Finance Authority (AHFA). Equity was provided by AuburnBank.

Testimonials

“Solstice is a very nice place to be. I have friends up, down and across the street. I knew immediately I wanted to live here. I came here and I felt like I was home. I really wanted and garage or carport and now I do. It’s one of the nicest places I’ve ever lived.”

“I’ve lived here two years and I love it. It’s quiet and peaceful. The upkeep is wonderful, there’s great landscaping that is well maintained. I love my whole apartment, the carport, planter on the back porch and all the storage. I have nice neighbors, I love them. We have dinner once a month at the clubhouse but we meet for dinner at each other’s homes and visit on our front porches, too.”

“We love it… period,” explains Wyman. “I love the openness of the floor plan. If I’m in the kitchen, I can still talk to everyone. We’ve made new friends and have potluck dinners with them.” “I love, love, love my kitchen,” says Margaret. “We are so happy to have a carport to protect from the rain. We have roses and gardenias [in the back porch planter] that are doing well. We love everything about it.”
